Here is Paddy’s verdict on Dean Smith’s Norwich, who had a go for all of 25 minutes before a capitulation which took some beating even by the Canaries’ Premier League standard.
• Tim Krul 4
Of all the clubs to offer up a gift for the former Newcastle United trainee. So good with the ball at his feet in the first half, to clip perfect diagonals in the direction of Kenny McLean and Dimi Giannoulis.
Did not sense the danger or get enough weight on a ball rolled towards McLean pounced on by Bruno Guimaraes, who dismissively chipped over the advancing Krul.
Thereafter was kept busy to drop to his left to deny Joelinton a hat-trick, then clutch Joe Willock’s effort before flying to his right to parry a deflected hit from Alain Saint-Maximin. Joelinton’s opener, however, seemed to beat him for pace as it flew in above his head.
Could only wave Dan Burn's near post flick goodbye as it veered beyond his far post. Kicked away Matt Targett’s driven centre at his near post.
• Sam Byram 6
Failed lunge to intercept Saint-Maximin's pass for Joelinton, who crashed a rising right footer past Krul. But composed header back in first half stoppage time.
Switched into the centre of defence in the second half, and was around on the cover in the 72nd minute after Burn got the initial flick.
• Grant Hanley (C) 6
Halted Saint-Maximin and used his experience to let the ball run out of play to quell a Newcastle attack.
No luck when a last-ditch sliding tackle on Josh Murphy saw the ball squirt sideways for Joelinton to slot.
• Christoph Zimmermann 5
Big call to parachute him back in after six weeks without a kick. Passing range was erratic. Did clip an inviting ball for Kieran Dowell as early as the third minute.
Tracked an early Joelinton run and was around on the cover. Sliding block cut out a Murphy cross at his near post.
• Dimi Giannoulis 5
Lost Murphy for a volleyed chance. Failed to heed the warning when the same player ran off the back of him and into the area to tee up Saint-Maximin, who in turn squared for Joelinton to open the scoring.
Less of the attacking instincts we saw at Old Trafford. There was one teasing cross from a McLean throw in but no takers.
• Mathias Normann 5
Started like a player in the mood. Ended with a dejected shuffle to the sidelines to be substituted after failing to shake off an injury to the top of his right foot. No intensity to press for Newcastle’s second.
Best moment by some distance was the exquisite clip over the top for Dowell, who needs to hit the target.
• Kenny McLean 5
Could hardly be blamed for Guimaraes nicking a pass intended for him from Krul for the third goal. Covered a huge amount of Carrow Road.
Twice tried and failed to link with Milot Rashica. Left Shaun Longstaff in a heap after a thumping mid-air duel.
• Kieran Dowell 6
Two stand out chances before Newcastle struck.
The first he had to get on target when he lobbed Mathias Normann’s peach of a pass over the top. Struck a superb 20-yard free kick that was arrowing towards the top corner before Martin Dubravka clawed it out.
• Pierre Lees-Melou 5
Slaloming run in the 18th minute released Pukki initially for Dowell’s second big chance chance. Weight on the pass may have forced Pukki to veer wider around Dubravka. Similar story on the halfway line later in the first half but with time and space the ball for Pukki was too heavy.
Fooled Emil Krafth down the left with quick feet but the cross intended for Pukki was met powerfully by Burn.
• Milot Rashica 5
Anonymous before his second half exit. Got in behind in the second minute but his cut back was cleared by Jamal Lascelles.
Hopeful lob claimed easily by Dubravka a minute prior to the interval. Heading for a second consecutive demotion with two different clubs.
• Teemu Pukki 6
No headlines this time around against Newcastle. Forced wide by Dubravka when he latched onto Pierre Lees-Melou's pass, but was still able to try and pick out Dowell.
Fired across Dubravka in the 65th minute from Joanathan Rowe’s pass. Attracted a posse of Newcastle defenders before a diagonal ball for Max Aarons, who took a heavy first touch.
Subs:
• Max Aarons (for Christoph Zimmermann, 58) 5
Was in a shooting position when he tried to control Pukki’s pass.
• Jonathan Rowe (for Mathias Normann, 58) 6
Twice picked up the ball and drove at backpedalling Newcastle defenders to slip in Pukki.
• Christos Tzolis (for Milot Rashica, 75) 5
