Former Norwich City talisman Darren Huckerby has revealed he still questions whether he could have done more for a teammate who attempted to take his own life.
Leon McKenzie, who famously scored twice on his Canaries debut against Ipswich Town, has spoken openly about his mental health struggles during and after his career.
The 46-year-old also previously revealed he had made an attempt to end his life in his darkest moment.
Huckerby and McKenzie became close friends during their time together at Carrow Road and have stayed in touch ever since.
The flying winger revealed he had spoken to his teammate just a week before his suicide attempt.
Speaking at a mental health awareness event at the UEA Sportspark, marking World Mental Health day last week, Huckerby said: "I remember Leon rang me when he was at Coventry and was really struggling with injuries.
"I knew he was down but a week later he tried to kill himself. Sometimes I wonder if I could have done more."
In a powerful message, Huckerby urged others to try and look beneath the surface with their friends and loved ones.
He added: "Sometimes you don't know. Leon McKenzie was a big, strong, aggressive, attacking player and you wouldn't have thought he would have those kind of problems - but some people do.
"Sometimes you've got to look past the bravado and see what is behind it.
"Lucky for us, Leon is still with us and he is spreading his message the right way now."
Huckerby, who still lives in Norfolk, went on to emphasise the importance of reaching out to friends and loved ones who might be struggling.
He added: "You don't see it coming. You've got to speak with people, check with them and hopefully get them in the right direction."
His comments came at a mental health awareness event and fun run organised by Blakely, the club's main shirt sponsor, which also raised money for the Samaritans.
