King’s Lynn Town head to early play-off rivals Scarborough on Tuesday night with manager Adam Lakeland delighted with the first contribution from new signing Fin Barnes.
Barnes was signed on Friday, just in time to make his debut in Lynn’s 2-1 win at Radcliffe, which took them up to fifth in the National League North standings.
And Lakeland liked what he saw from a player who, coincidentally, tied Lynn in knots when he played against them for Scarborough last season.
“I thought he was electric, I thought he was so good,” said the Lynn boss.
“I knew if we worked the ball up to him and Ross (Crane) they would probably have quite a bit of space on transition. They are both a real threat, they both travel with the ball really well. They both want to try and go past the opposition.
“He’s only trained with us a couple of times but we had to work really hard right up until five o’clock on Friday night so he was eligible to play today. A lot of credit for that should go to (club secretary) Julie (Briggs) and to the chairman and to the National League, particularly (general manager) Mark Ives, as well.
“We just saw a glimpse today of hopefully what he will bring to us for the remainder of the season. For that to be his first game, and that’s the output that we got from him, he's only going to get better as we learn and understand how to use it to our advantage.
“Really pleased for him and pleased for the whole 17, 18 who obviously played, travelled or missed out, and being on the bench - it was a collective effort.”
Scarborough go into the game against Lynn on the back of a 2-1 home defeat to South Shields on Saturday. But few Lynn fans will forget last season’s games against the Seadogs - Lynn were beaten 2-0 on the coast and 4-3 at The Walks – a game which they led 3-0 but contrived to lose after conceding twice in injury time.
Lakeland will hoping there is no repeat.
“I think in terms of how the game will be, it will be quite similar to today (at Radcliffe),” he said. “They are a team that wants to get on the front foot and wants to commit bodies forward and they always cause a threat, and score goals. But I’m sure with the players we have that we can cause them problems as well. We'll just get ourselves rested up now, recovered, and we'll go up there expecting obviously another difficult game, but one that we're going to try and get something from.”
