A great-grandfather took his own life at the age of 94 after growing frustrated with a significant decline in his physical health, an inquest has heard.

Arthur Nunn, known to some as Jimmy, died in May this year after entering the garden pond of his home in Ellingham, near Bungay.

An inquest into his death heard the tragic incident came during a period when Mr Nunn had been going through mental health struggles sparked by declines in his physical condition.

His son, Peter Nunn, told the court his father had become increasingly frustrated with his declining health.

He said: "My dad had really been struggling with poor mental health.

"He was unhappy and frustrated at how he was having to live, struggling to do things for himself."

The court heard Mr Nunn had suffered from a series of physical conditions which had caused his health to decline, including a working diagnosis of heart failure.

And as his physical health declined, so too did his mental health as he struggled to adjust to not being able to live as active a life.

But on the morning of his death, his son said he had visited and found him "the best he had been for some time" and excited about watching darts and horse racing.

That afternoon, however, Mr Nunn was found face down in his garden pond.

The court heard he had on separate occasions told his son and a nurse at his GP surgery that he had considered taking his life in this way.

Christopher Leach, assistant coroner for Norfolk, concluded Mr Nunn's death, on May 24 this year, was suicide.
