A new book exploring the darker side of Jane Austen's world is set to hit the shelves.
Norwich-based journalist Angela Youngman has released The Dark Side of Jane Austen’s World, showcasing the grim realities behind the Regency period depicted in Austen's novels.
The book, published by Pen and Sword Books, aims to add a fresh perspective to the much-loved classics, revealing the challenges women faced.
From the perils of staying single to the risks associated with marriage, the book highlights the limited options available to women during the era.
Youngman’s work demonstrates how Austen’s narrative intertwined with societal issues such as opium addiction, inadequate medical standards and property shortage.
It also discusses the societal disorder brought about by slavery and the desperation that led many to seek solace in India, leading to the creation of "fishing fleets" where girls were sent off to marry strangers.
The Dark Side of Jane Austen’s World aims to deepen the understanding of Austen's novels and is available now.
