Drainage works that have seen a village road shut for 11 weeks have been extended until December, frustrating locals in the area.

Bunwell Street in Bunwell closed on July 15 and was originally due to reopen on September 27.

But an extension to the works programme has seen the date pushed back by another 10 weeks.

A map showing the closure and diversion route ​(Image: One Network) A spokeswoman for Norfolk County Council said that the drainage works had experienced stoppages due to "unforeseen utility clashes" and additional trial holes needed to be excavated for further investigation.

She added: "A programme review with our contractor has determined that the temporary road closure will need to be extended by an additional 10 weeks, weather permitting and assuming no further unknown utility clashes.

"The County Council thanks people for their patience and apologises for any  inconvenience while this vital drainage improvement work is carried out."

A woman who lives in Bunwell said life in the village had been disrupted by the works: "No buses are coming into either Bunwell or Carelton Rode villages, just running along the main road.

"Businesses are really suffering and villagers are very angry with the delay."

The works are now expected to be completed on December 6, 2024.
