The Bishop of Norwich said he was 'flattered' after a passer-by spotted him on a church roof and reported him to police as a suspicious 'youth'.

The Right Rev Graham Usher was with a group inspecting solar panels on the top of St Peter Mancroft church in the centre of Norwich when a member of the public saw them and raised the alarm.

Police went to the scene and cleared up the confusion.

The bishop posted on social media: "Good to dedicate to God the creator all the net zero work at St Peter Mancroft - solar panels, air source heat pumps, batteries and LED lighting. 

"Though a passer-by reported the "youth" on the roof to the police so we had a visit from Norfolk police - I am flattered."

In March, work began to install 48 solar panels on the Hay Hill side of the roof. Interior lights were changed and heat pumps were also fitted. 

The Bishop was inspecting the solar panels along with the Rev Edward Carter of St Peter Mancroft and a BBC reporter.

An assistant is understood to have explained the situation to police when they arrived.

The new eco adaptions to the church were celebrated in a harvest eucharist held at the church on Sunday morning.

During the service, Bishop Graham, who is the lead on the environment for the Anglican Church, said: "Well it's been great to be up on the roof to be able to see your new installation.

"I understand the police were called... it's great to be called a youth."
