The refurbishment of a Norfolk leisure centre will not be complete until next year due to "unforeseen" delays. 

Diss Leisure Centre, run by South Norfolk Council, has been closed since February after securing £4m funding to modernise the pool and changing rooms. 

However, delays to the project mean the facility, which was due to reopen in around two months, will remain shut until mid-January.

This is due to a "significant issue" with the original changing room floor at the centre, which now requires a complete replacement.

A spokesman for the centre said: "This unforeseen issue has caused a slight delay, pushing the reopening to mid-January.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this and appreciate your understanding. Rest assured, we're doing everything we can to be able to welcome you back as soon as possible."

The rest of the work being carried out the site is said to be "progressing smoothly". 

The project has been met with backlash from some locals who are unhappy about the removal of the sauna and steam rooms at the centre. 

The revamped Diss Leisure Centre will include a shallower swimming pool, an improved spectator seating area and bigger and revamped changing rooms.
