Algy’s Farm Shop, a family-run business in Bintree, North Norfolk, has been named winner of the Food and Drink Retailer award, sponsored by Newman Refrigeration Ltd, at the Norfolk magazine Food & Drink Awards 2024.
Algy’s Farm Shop offers a fantastic range of seasonal home-grown produce including asparagus, cauliflower, cabbages, broccoli, popcorn, kale and bird seed, as well as products from other East Anglian suppliers and start-ups.
Run by Algy and Catherine Garrod, the shop at Manor Farm also offers freshly baked bread from local bakeries, as well as locally-sourced meat, milk, cheese, eggs and fish.
Homemade woodfired pizzas are cooked fresh on site and there are plans for a newly expanded shop and café in the coming months.
The judges commended the business for its “friendly and very knowledgeable” staff.
They also praised Algy and Catherine for demonstrating a “great commitment and investment to the local food scene”.
Algy said: “This is a great recognition of the hard work behind the scenes from all our staff and suppliers, plus our lovely customers.
“It’s what enables us to go forwards. It means a lot, and it’s a great surprise.”
Finalist: Church Farm Shop
Located in the village of Hethersett, Church Farm Shop is managed by Jake and Linda Willgress and provides a range of local products.
The judges said that the “warm hospitality” and “product knowledge” of staff are standout features of the customer experience at Church Farm Shop and that the team “offers a great service to the local community”. The judges were also impressed with the recent decision to bake their own range of cakes, which they said “offers a great USP to their shop”.
Finalist: The Norfolk Delicatessen
Established in 2014, the Norfolk Delicatessen provides an excellent range of coffee, tea, cheese, beer, wine, spirits and chilli sauce from its site in Hunstanton.
It is renowned for its hampers, which bring Norfolk products to a national customer base. The judges appreciated The Norfolk Deli’s exceptional showcase of Norfolk products. With its nearby coffee shop offering homemade cakes, the judges said the deli has “strong potential” for further growth and success.
Finalist: Willow Tree Delicatessen
Located at Wroxham Barns in North Norfolk, Willow Tree Delicatessen is a speciality food store offering a range of local, regional and international charcuterie, cheeses, antipasti, ciders, beers, wines, spirits and fine foods.
Managed by Martin Dupée, the business celebrates the best of East Anglian produce.
The judges said Willow Tree Delicatessen is a “must-visit for anybody looking for a great range of local products”. They admired Martin’s passion, dedication and knowledge.
