The owner/chef of an award-winning pub in south Norfolk has received an Outstanding Achievement Award at this year's Norfolk magazine Food & Drink Awards 2024.
The Kings Head in Bawburgh has quietly become a beacon of culinary excellence and warm hospitality over the past 35 years, but the influence of the man behind its transformation has largely gone unnoticed until now.
When Anton Wimmer first took over The Kings Head, he focused on the essentials: attentive service, hearty dishes and a welcoming atmosphere.
Over time, his passion for sustainability and locally sourced ingredients began to shape the pub’s reputation.
His innovative ‘48 Mile’ menu, showcasing ingredients sourced from within a 48-mile radius, became a defining feature. It was a perfect blend of tradition and forward-thinking that resonated with both locals and food enthusiasts alike.
Under his leadership, The Kings Head has racked up numerous awards, including Norfolk magazine Food and Drink Awards Pub of the Year, South Norfolk Pub of the Year and 2 AA rosettes every year since 2014.
Recently, it was also a finalist for ‘Pub of the Year’ at the East of England Tourism Awards 2022-2023, further cementing its status.
Despite the accolades, Anton remains humble, focused on the experience rather than the praise. His quiet dedication has turned a village pub into a regional landmark, with a reputation that speaks for itself.
Anton Wimmer is now synonymous with hospitality, having transformed The Kings Head into a culinary destination beloved by all, with a community focus intertwined into his overall vision.
Commenting on his win, Anton said: “I feel very honoured. My family’s run the pub for 41 years, so it’s been very important to my upbringing.
“I’ve been involved in hospitality and catering all my life, surrounded by great people. I’ve brought great people into the industry and also seen them grow, which is great.”
He concluded by saying: “This isn’t just an achievement for me, but an achievement for all the staff, suppliers and people who have helped me along the way.”
