More details have emerged about a major fire at Wells-next-the-Sea.

Just before 3pm on August 29, emergency services were sent to battle a blaze which had broken out on East Hills as hundreds of shocked holidaymakers watched on from the shore.

At least six fire engines and extra support vehicles attended alongside several RNLI lifeboats and the local coastguard unit.

Police used their new police boat for the first time to help ferry firefighters and equipment to East Hills, which can only be accessed by water or a four-mile walk across marshlands.

Officers were quickly able to arrest a man in his 60s on suspicion of arson, who has since been released on bail as investigations continue.

The fire re-ignited as the water levels lowered that evening but crews from all forces returned to fight the flames once again.

Norfolk Constabulary has since reflected on the successful multi-agency mission.

"This incident highlighted the diverse work of our coastal marine team, as well as being a true example of local emergency service teams applying years of local knowledge of the area, working together to respond to a major incident as a coordinated team," a statement released by the force said.

"No individual service could have achieved this in isolation."

The statement added how the police had made their arrest of the man on suspicions of arson.

 It said: "The incident unfolded in front of hundreds of holiday makers and beach goers while our response officers and Beat Manager for Wells carried out a prompt investigation, including speaking to witnesses, which lead to the early arrest of a man in his 60s on suspicion of arson."
