A man accused of throwing a noxious substance over a couple who knocked at his door claimed they brought the substances with them.
Scott McIntosh has gone on trial accused of two counts of administering a poison or noxious substance with intent after throwing liquid over them.
Jurors in the trial at Norwich Crown Court have heard the 57-year-old allegedly threw liquid over the pair after they turned up at his home in Darrell Place, Norwich, following a dispute.
It was after a row at a nearby property where they had all been drinking when McIntosh called the woman a "slapper".
Giving evidence on Thursday (August 29) McIntosh told Ed Renvoize, defending, the woman's then partner "threatened to kill me" after he made the insult.
McIntosh said he then left the property to go to the "safety" of his house.
But he said the woman and the man later turned up at his address "banging on the door".
He said he opened the door and there was a "scuffle".
McIntosh suggested it was the man and the woman who brought the liquid with them to his address.
He said he had not thrown anything on them although conceded he might have assaulted them in the scuffle as he pushed them out the door.
Asked whether he expected police to arrest him after he called them, he said: "No".
Earlier jurors heard statements from ambulance staff who attended having been called to an incident involving a potential harmful substance query acid attack.
The two victims were assessed after having showers - as they had been advised by call handlers - with the female victim found to have "very red eyes".
As well as redness to and around her eyes, she also had redness around her groin area. The male victim also had redness to the groin area.
Paramedics wanted to take both to hospital but they declined.
McIntosh, of Darrell Place, Norwich, has denied both offences.
The trial continues.
