Greyhound mauls Jack Russell in horrific Stalham attack

The "vicious attack" happened at around 7.30pm on Monday when a dog sitter in her late 60s was walking the pooch towards the allotments in Stalham. 

The greyhound reportedly locked its jaw around the terrier and tore its abdomen open in two places.

Cindy, a small white Jack Russell, was rushed to the Westover Vets in North Walsham for emergency surgery after sustaining life-threatening injuries.  

The shocking incident took place in a spot surrounded by fields opposite the main road, close to a few houses and right next to the Broads. 

The dog sitter sustained an injury to her hand after she was bitten during the attack.

In hospital for open-heart surgery at the time of the attack, Cindy's 88-year-old owner was "upset" and "shocked" to discover news of the incident.  

Her granddaughter described how her grandmother "felt useless in the situation". 

The incident was reported to police after the greyhound, which was believed to be an ex-racing dog, escaped from a home in the area.

Cindy became a "main companion" when she was adopted from a rescue centre after the family tragically lost their previous dog in a road accident. 

Visiting Cindy before she underwent surgery, the owner's granddaughter said that "her guts were hanging out".

With no pet insurance to cover the emergency operation and after-care costs, the family are facing a large vet bill between £4,000 to £5,000.
