Liz Truss almost missed the moment she lost her seat because she was in McDonald's.

The former prime minister, who spent just 44 days in the top job, lost out to Labour's Terry Jermy who became the MP for South West Norfolk with 11,847 votes, more than Ms Truss’s 11,217.

A TikTok from The Daily Telegraph podcast exposed the 49-year-old when an interviewer asked her why she was delayed on stage.

"I didn't particularly want to hang around at the count, there were various dubious journalists from the BBC there.

"And so then suddenly we got a call that the results are going to be in 10 minutes."

Despite the 24-hour McDonald's branch offering a selection of McMuffin breakfast options, Ms Truss went for a bottle of water as she "didn't feel very hungry at 5am" and her daughter had some hash browns.

"So we got on the road and it was only a seven-minute drive from the McDonald's to the King's Lynn Leisure Centre," she continued.

"But unfortunately, just at that moment we were approaching a railway line and the level crossing came down.

"I was very stressed because I knew that the result was kind of being read out in that moment, I just thought 'this is class'."

She added: "I knew I'd lost."

While people waited for her there were slow hand-claps and a shout of: "Has anyone got a lettuce."

South West Norfolk was previously considered the seventh-safest Tory seat, with a majority of 26,195 after the last election.
