This weekend is the last chance to submit your nominations for the Eastern Daily Press Norfolk Education Awards 2024.

The awards offer the chance to showcase the dedication, innovation and engagement that is seen throughout Norfolk’s education sector.

Here we speak to Kim Shellock, regional manager at headline sponsor Step Teachers, about the Overall Education Hero of the Year category.

What would you say are the benefits of being educated in Norfolk?

Norfolk is steeped in history and the county allows students access to fantastic cultural learning opportunities. Being educated in Norfolk allows students access to museums, historical sights, the local music and art scene and close-knit ties with thriving business sectors.

All of these allow students to follow their interests and be inspired by those around them.

Many of Norfolk’s educational institutions have high rankings and accreditations. With the option of a thriving city or the Norfolk countryside, there is a diverse community allowing the education sector to thrive.

What are your hopes for the future of education in Norfolk?

It is my hope that education within Norfolk can champion innovation and embrace technology to prepare students for life outside of school; that Norfolk’s educational institutions can collaborate with other sectors to strive for excellence and cater to the range of different learners that we have amongst it; and that educational settings continue to be a safe space where students can develop their sense of self in inclusive and supportive environments.

What are the qualities you are looking for in the hero category?

In the hero category, I am looking to see educators or students who can demonstrate exceptional dedication that goes above and beyond. Qualities may include inspiring leadership, unwavering commitment to education, contributions that extend beyond the classroom or teaching methods that have made a profound impact on students.

Why is it important to celebrate our education heroes?

Celebrating our education heroes is crucial as it acknowledges the hard work, dedication and impact those who work in education have on students’ lives.

These awards highlight the fantastic work that happens in schools across our county daily and celebrating this inspires others to pursue excellence in teaching or as a student. Allowing others to hear the success stories reinforces the value of pushing ourselves to succeed.
