A former dairy which a parish council hoped to turn into a new community centre has been put up for sale.

Heacham Parish Council bought the Old Dairy, at the corner of the High Street and Pound Lane in the centre of the village, in 2014.

It later obtained planning permission for a village hall, library, meeting rooms and offices on the site.

But villagers were divided over proposals to borrow more than £1m via a public works loan to fund it and the council agreed to put the scheme on hold in April 2022.

In December last year it emerged the parish council had sunk more than £360,000 into the project before it was formally abandoned.

The site, which has now gone up for sale via agents Cruso & Wilkin is believed to be worth £450,000 - meaning the council will more than recoup its outlay.

Its listing on C&W's website describes it as a "potential development opportunity".

It adds: "The Old Dairy is situated within the village centre of Heacham, which lies 14 miles north of King’s Lynn, and three miles south of Hunstanton.

"This sought after village location is in close proximity to amenities including a post office opposite the site, together with gym, bakery, primary school and supermarkets.

"In addition, the village benefits from a bus route to the neighbouring towns."

The property is being advertised for sale via private tender in two lots - the main two-storey building on Pound Lane; along with a barn and the so-called Float Shed, which was an area where electric milk floats which used to deliver around the area were charged.

Parish council minutes say members decided unanimously to sell the site.
