Further inquiries are on-going into the death of a man who was assaulted days before his death, a coroner has confirmed. 

The body of Matthew Griggs was found by his girlfriend on a quiet lane on the outskirts of Norwich last year. 

Four days before his death, the 38-year-old had been involved in two separate altercations in the city centre. 

Police launched a murder investigation after a post mortem revealed he had suffered blunt force trauma to his chest.  

In the weeks following the discovery of the body on September 23, on Church Lane, Sprowston, officers arrested four men, three in their 40s and one in his 20s, on suspicion of murder. 

They all remain on police bail while the investigation continues.   

Mr Griggs had been found by his partner, who then sought the assistance of dog walkers, who in turn called the ambulance service.

Paying tribute to Mr Griggs, his family said he would be "sorely missed by all". 

They added: “Matthew was never happier than when he was in the kitchen preparing a meal - despite the kitchen being left like a bomb site when he had finished!  

"These skills were often put to good use as he worked in various pubs, hotels and restaurants throughout East Anglia in the 2000s. 

"Matthew was a kind-hearted person who loved his independence.” 

Speaking at a recent brief pre-inquest review, area coroner Samantha Goward confirmed that “inquiries are on-going" into his death. 

She adjourned the inquest for a future hearing on September 19 at Norfolk Coroner’s Court at County Hall, Norwich.
