More than 300 trees are to be felled on the King's Sandringham estate to make way for an extension to a caravan and camping site.

The scheme will see dozens more pitches added to the site, off Lynn Road, near the main A149 coast road close to King's Lynn.

Before the work can start, around 355 trees - including 120 Douglas Fir, 122 Scots Pines and 61 Silver Birch - need to be removed from commercial woodland plantations to the east and west of the existing campsite.

However, a planning officer said this would have only a 'negligible impact' on the wider landscape and an ecologist's report said the site did not contain any "priority habitats".

The Caravan and Motorhome Club, which runs the site, plans to plant more trees and enhance the remaining woodland area.

In a planning statement, it said: "The Sandringham Estate Club Campsite is one of the most popular on the network and is often fully booked.

"The proposal is to extend the touring and camping facility to the south west of the existing site as the land lends itself naturally due to its topography and by being easily accessible from the existing road network."

A small shop is included in the proposals, along with a dog and bike wash.

The plans, which have been approved by West Norfolk Council, will see 28 new all-weather touring caravan pitches created, along with four 'premium pitches', two new accessible pitches, 12 camping pitches, 15 safari tent pitches and a new toilet block.

The planning officer's report said: "It is considered that development at this scale as proposed, within the wider plantation woodlands will only result in a minor impact to the overall pattern of the large plantation woodlands and would have a negligible impact on the wider landscape character of the area.

"Further, with the woodland management and additional planting proposed, the site would offer some betterment in the quality of woodland as well as the planting on site."

The site currently offers 138 pitches, priced from £21.90 - £36.90 a night.

Sandringham receives rave reviews from visitors, who love its setting and the woodland walks, as well as nearby attractions and beaches.
