A Norfolk pub is celebrating importing 3,000 bottles of wine from its extended family in Germany.

Frank and Jo Butt, of the Angel Inn in Loddon, have accepted the arrival of the pub’s fifth wine shipment of a pallet containing over 600 bottles of family wine from a cousin’s vineyard in the Rhineland.

This brings the total imported since the ex-teachers re-opened the pub just under two years ago to 3,000 bottles.

“When we first started shipping the wine we took a huge risk, as German wine has such a bad reputation in this country, due to supermarkets stocking the leftovers that the Germans don’t want," Mr Butt said.

"But we are importing a delightful selection of twelve wines, six of which have won awards.

"Our customers have taken to them in a big way."

The business owners have said the house white, a dry, fruity classic Weissbegunder (pinot blanc in French) has been the go-to top seller.

"But now our locals are being more adventurous and trying some of the other numbers and, with the sun out, they discovered our range of three rosé wines, running our stocks down fast," Mrs Butt added.

Not to be outdone by the wine drinkers, partakers of ale at the Angel have supped through over 200 different local beers at the pub.

“Every week’s a beer festival at the Angel”, said regular Richard Maas.

“Each Friday, there is a completely different line-up of real ales and over the weekend I’ve seen as many as 13 beers on the five pumps.

"I didn’t know there were so many breweries in Norfolk and Suffolk."

Mr and Mrs Butt eventually have plans to open their own brewery at the site as part of their ambitious, 10-year development plan.

The plans also include creating better disabled access, a covered outside seating area, accommodation, reviving the historic smokehouse and turning the old stable into a shop.
