Chippies across Norfolk have been celebrated for serving some of the best fish and chips in the country.

From family firms to popular takeaways, each business serves its own top-notch offerings when it comes to the staple British dish.

Here are seven fish and chip shops in Norfolk that have received accolades in 2024. 

1. Beck's Fish and Chips

Matthew Beck took over the takeaway fish and chip shop in North Elmham, near Dereham, in March 2023.

The 34-year-old who lives in Fakenham previously managed Platten's in Wells and Eric's Fish and Chips in Thornham.

Beck's Fish and Chips was named the winner of the Eastern Daily Press' Your Favourite Awards 2024 after getting the most public votes.  

The chippy is set back from the main road, near the old railway crossing, and serves a classic chip shop menu with all the usual offerings.

2. Downstairs at No.1

Situated on Cromer seafront, Downstairs at No.1 was named among the top 20 chippies in the UK by The Observer. 

The business has been celebrated for serving some of the "freshest and most delicious" seafood in the UK.

No.1 is owned by Galton Blackiston, who runs Michelin-star awarded Morston Hall, along with business partners Spencer Gray and Tracy Blackiston. 

In November, BAFTA-winning actress Suranne Jones visited the business and posted a photo on her Instagram account, which has more than half a million followers, from the restaurant. 

3. French's Fish Shop

French’s Fish Shop in Wells scooped a prize at the National Fish and Chip Awards which celebrates "the best of the best" chippies across the country.

The event, which was hosted by comedian Rob Beckett, saw the business win the Quality Accreditation Champion category.

According to The National Federation of Fish Friers, the award "celebrates businesses throughout the UK that serve the highest quality fish and chips, demonstrate excellent working practices, and continually strive for the best".

French's has been selling fish and chips for more than 100 years and was originally opened by William Thomas French in 1921, the business is still run by the same family four generations later.

4. Barrons Fish Bar

Barrons Fish Bar, in Costessey, came out on top after readers voted in the Norwich Evening News' Your Favourite Awards.

The Norwich Road chippy beat four rivals to the 2024 title: Grosvenor Fish Bar in Lower Goat Lane, Thorpe Fish Bar in Yarmouth Road, The Little Fish Bar in Bowthorpe Road and Bishop Bridge Fish and Chips.

Barrons Fish Bar co-owners Michael Etheridge and Matthew Bonham will receive a trophy and vinyl banner for the win.

5. Henry's of Hunstanton

The Good Food Awards 2024 released its roundup of the best fish and chip shops across the country with several spots in Norfolk getting the accolade. 

Henry's of Hunstanton in The Green was awarded the blue ribbon for its "food quality, service and value".

The eatery only opened its doors in 2019 but has already picked up a host of awards including being a finalist in the National Fish and Chip Awards.

6. Fishers of Hunstanton

Fishers was the other fish and chip shop in Hunstanton to be awarded a blue ribbon.

The shop in Greevegate has been open since the 1960s, serving fish and chips with its signature batter. 

It has been a favourite of celebrities with Harry Potter star Warwick Davis being spotted enjoying his cod and chips.

7. Chish and Fips

This Norwich chippy in Angel Road was awarded the coveted gold seal for more than three years of excellence. 

The award-winning shop has been open for more than 80 years and is popular in the city.

It offers options such as battered pizza, pigs in blankets and Creme Eggs to give customers something different to try.
