An inquest has been opened into the death of a man whose family say Martha’s Rule could have made “a huge difference” to his care.
Michael Pearcey, of Postwick, died at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital (N&N) from multi organ failure after undergoing surgery on his lung.
The 85-year-old was operated on at the N&N on February 6 and died there just over two weeks later on February 22.
Since his death, Martha's rule has been rolled out to give patients and their families a louder voice.
Named after Martha Mills, a 13-year-old girl who died from sepsis, the rule allows families to request urgent and independent second opinions.
Mr Pearcey’s son, Norwich businessman Marcus Pearcey, said he felt Martha's rule would have made a huge difference if it was in effect while his father was being treated.
He said: "Martha's rule is going to be a massive game-changer for people.
"This will make a huge difference as I think if I would have known about it, I would have had the strength to call for it."
A full inquest will take place later in the year.
