Norwich City fans assured of suitable policing at Leeds

A Leeds fan in his 60s was injured after an object was thrown and cut his chin after the 0-0 draw in the semi-final opener at Carrow Road.

The incident left some City fans worried about repercussions at Elland Road, particularly after various allegations were made on social media.

However, it is hoped matters have calmed after swift police action saw two men in their late teens arrested and a 50-year-old charged with assault and possession of class A drugs.

A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: "As for all matches at Elland Road there will be a suitable policing operation in place, for Thursday’s game, to ensure all those attending are able to have a safe and enjoyable time."

But in a statement released by Leeds' Football Club it confirmed an increased presence will be at the game tonight.

It said: "The safety and security of both home and away supporters attending the match at Elland Road is of paramount importance.

"We know tensions will be heightened given what is at stake in the match, but we ask all supporters to think about their actions and any potential consequences.

"In the interests of safety, there will be an increased police presence at Elland Road on Thursday evening."

A Norwich City spokesman confirmed the club is coordinating with police as usual ahead of a match but declined to comment further.

In a statement after Sunday's game, a Leed United statement said that the club "condemn any violence at football matches".

Robin Sainty, chairman of the Canaries Trust, said: "People have been concerned about going up to Leeds in case of any reprisals.

"We've had conversations with our opposite numbers at the Leeds Trust who have been really helpful.

"They've been keeping an eye on the atmosphere there to see if there was any great escalation but it seems pretty quiet, which is good news."

A man in his late teens was arrested on Monday night on suspicion of assault and affray and released on bail until August 13.

The other man in his late teens was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH and a public order offence and bailed until July 13.

Graham Riches, 50, of Dyer Close, Horsford, was charged with assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of Class A drugs. He will appear at Norwich Magistrates Court on June 7.
