An undiagnosed heart condition contributed to the death of a man in police custody who was arrested during a mental health crisis.

Andrew Davis, of Earlham Grove in Norwich, died in June 2022 while being held in custody at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre.

He had been arrested and detained after threatening to harm himself and his wife during a psychotic episode, but was due to be released after officers decided to take no further action against him.

An inquest into his death concluded on Wednesday, with a jury concluding that he had died a drug-related death contributed to by an undiagnosed heart condition.

Earlier in the hearing, the court heard that less than 48 hours earlier he had been treated at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital having taken an overdose of medication.

He was discharged from hospital after six hours of investigations, but later that day - on June 26 - police were then called after he had threatened to harm himself and his wife with two kitchen knives.

He was taken to Wymondham PIC where he was recorded to have been breathing irregularly and was seen by two registered nurses and a mental health professional.

These professionals decided he required admission to a mental health hospital - but no beds were available and he was instead to be released home into the care of the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust's crisis team until one became free.

He was being escorted in a wheelchair to be taken home when he collapsed and despite efforts to resuscitate him could not be saved. He died on June 27, 2022 at the Wymondham base.

Meanwhile, the court had earlier heard that a police sergeant had mistakenly believed him to be "play-acting" during his collapse - which he described to a colleague as "Neighbours quality".
