A north Norfolk-based hospitality chain is closing one of its coffee shop bars in a seaside village.

The Gangway has announced it will close The Porthole coffee shop and bar in Mundesley's Station Road at the end of this month.

Its owners said they have made the "incredibly difficult decision" to close The Porthole, which opened in January 2023, due to "the current economic climate and the demands of the business on our young family".

The Gangway chain also owns coffee shops and bars serving coffees, craft beers, wines and cocktails in both Cromer and Sheringham.

The north Norfolk-based business, which describes itself as an 'indie' hospitality chain, also runs The Quarter Deck restaurant in Sheringham - all of which will remain open.

However, despite the closure in Mundesley, the owners teased that there "won't be an empty window on the high street for long" as there is "something new coming this summer".

"Regrettably we need to announce that, as of the end of May, The Porthole will be serving its final lattes and Pornstar Martinis to the good people of Mundesley before we shelve our jiggers and close the doors for good," the owners said in a post on The Porthole's Facebook page today.

"It has been incredibly difficult to come to this decision but, given the current economic climate and the demands of the business on our young family, it’s a necessary step for us to take.

"We remain incredibly proud of what we’ve managed to build over the past year with the support of our amazing staff. Special thanks to them for bearing with us and contributing so much to making the place what it is today!

"And it goes without saying we’ll miss chatting to our supportive regulars. You’ve made us feel like a real part of the community and that means a huge amount to us. Thank you so much to all of you, you know who you are!

"In the meantime, please continue to support us through May and help us go out with a bang, and do continue to support all of the independent businesses in the village! Now more than ever we’re sure they would be grateful for it.

"Finally, please rest assured we won’t be leaving another empty window on the high street for long. Keep an eye on that space for something new coming this summer!"
