A47 Brundall Service Station plans clear highways hurdle

Shell UK wants to knock down and rebuild the Brundall Service Station in Yarmouth Road.

The fuel company wants to tear down the existing buildings and forecourt on the site, to replace them with a new sales building, a forecourt with underground tanks, pumps and canopy, car parking spaces and bays to charge electric vehicles.

Plans lodged with Broadland District Council are a revision to previous proposals, which were withdrawn after National Highways lodged an 'in principle' objection.

The government's roads company had raised concerns the layout could have caused cars to block the site entrance and access to the McDonald's next door.

But National Highways has now told the district council that it does not have an objection to the latest proposals, beyond a condition that an appropriate plan for how traffic will be managed during construction must be submitted before work starts.

Brundall Parish Council has not objected to the proposals, although Postwick with Witton Parish Council has raised concerns about access to the site for cars and lorries.

And councillor Eleanor Laming, who represents Brundall on Broadland District Council, had previously raised concerns.

The Green councillor was worried that the replacement petrol station will put more pressure on roads and threaten the safety of the nearby roundabout, especially with extra traffic likely due to the newly opened Brundall Sports Hub.

In her response to the planning application, she said: "This is already an issue
and will become more so as developments already planned for the surrounding area are completed."

A decision on whether to grant permission will be made by Broadland District Council in due course.
