When a group of pupils from north Norfolk rolled up their sleeves for a litter pick, little did they know an unusual surprise awaited them.
During a recent session with the Glide Surf School, the children of Beeston Hall, of West Runton, participated in a beach clean in Cromer.
The group filled four bags in 30 minutes and all contained the expected haul of plastic bottles, lids, crisp packets, and cans.
They were, however, somewhat surprised to find something else entirely lurking in the low tide... A moped!
"We couldn't quite believe it at first," said science teacher, David Godden, who led the clean-up.
"It was poking out of the sea on the low tide.
"Our surfing instructor, Ben Kewell, from Glide Surf School, and I devised a very carefully planned operation to remove the bike.
"Goodness knows what a moped was doing at sea in the first place. All I can say is that it was deceptively heavy."
It was the children who first spotted the bizarre item, initially believing it to be a seal.
Susannah Pallister, of Year 6, explained that as the tide lowered they realised it was a scooter.
"We all gathered around it for a photo because it was so unusual," she said.

Headmaster, Fred de Falbe, was impressed with the group's spirit and approach to helping its local area.
"Beeston Hall always prides itself on being part of the community," he said.
"The spirit with which our children have approached Surfing England's cleaning programme is particularly heartening.
"However, I daresay their very first session will prove the most momentous of all.
"Who knows what the children may find in the future?"
The beach clean was part of Surfing England's mission to help keep Britain's beaches clean and the children are part of the Grom Squad Junior Surfing Scheme.
