A Coldstream Guard from Dereham was unable to attend the King's coronation for a happy reason - as he was welcoming his baby girl into the world.

Mathew Syer, 28, a serving member of the First Battalion Coldstream Guards based at Windsor, and his wife Lauren Syer today welcomed their second child - just hours after King Charles was crowned.

Mr Syer was originally due to be in London for the procession but instead witnessed the birth of his daughter rather than the crowning of the new King and Queen.

Alice Charlotte Elaine Syer was born at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital at 5.10pm today (May 6), weighing 7lb 8oz.

Mrs Syer's grandad, dad, uncle and brother all served in the Coldstream Guards as well.

Big sister Lily can't wait to meet her.

Coldstream Guards have a ceremonial role as protectors of the royal palaces, including Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. The regiment is well known for its high-profile ceremonial duties.
