A special service will celebrate the installation of Revd Canon Dr Andrew Braddock as the 40th Dean of Norwich at Norwich Cathedral on Saturday, January 28, 2023.

Canon Andrew, 51, currently Interim Dean of Gloucester, will officially begin his new role at the helm of Norwich Cathedral at 2pm. The service will also be live-streamed on the Norwich Cathedral Services YouTube channel.

Canon Andrew’s appointment follows the retirement of the Very Revd Jane Hedges, the 39th Dean of Norwich, in May 2022.

Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approved the appointment of Canon Andrew on 6 September 2022 – just two days before she died.

Canon Andrew spent the first 10 years of his public ministry in the Diocese of Norwich. Ordained in Norwich Cathedral in 1998, he served his curacy in the parishes of Ranworth with Panxworth, Woodbastwick, South Walsham and Upton.

In 2001, he was appointed Rector of Cringleford and Colney, taking up the additional role of Rural Dean of Humbleyard in 2004.

In 2008, Andrew was appointed Diocesan Missioner in the Diocese of Gloucester and, in 2013, he became Canon Missioner of Gloucester Cathedral and Diocesan Director of Mission and Ministry. Andrew was commissioned as Interim Dean of Gloucester in April 2022.

Canon Andrew said: “It is a great joy, privilege and responsibility to take up the role of Dean of Norwich. In testing times, Norwich Cathedral is a beacon of Christian faith and hope.

“Coming back to Norwich to take on this role feels very much like coming home,” he added. “It’s nearly 25 years since I was ordained here in Norwich Cathedral as the beginning of my public ministry in this diocese. I hope the service is going to be a celebration of the role of this wonderful cathedral in the life of the city and the county.”

The Revd Canon Aidan Platten said: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming Andrew and his family to the cathedral. He is a man of great warmth and comes to us with much experience of cathedral ministry from his time in Gloucester. He will bring vision, energy and enthusiasm to his role as together we seek to serve within the city and county and the diocese of Norwich.”

Norwich Cathedral will be closed to general visitors from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, January 28 to allow the installation of the new Dean of Norwich to take place. The cathedral will open at 1pm for those attending the service.
