Fulfilling an aspiration to play in the Bundesliga was the driving factor behind Dimitris Giannoulis's move to FC Augsburg.

Norwich City's released left back ended intense speculation over his future by signing a four-year deal at the German club, who pipped Werder Bremen, Stuttgart and others in Greece to his signature.

Giannoulis' stay in Norfolk ended after 103 appearances and three and a half years at Carrow Road. His last appearance for City came in the play-off second leg defeat to Leeds United back in May.

The 28-year-old expressed a desire to remain overseas despite a chance to return to his homeland, and ambitions to play in the Bundesliga fuelled his move to the Fuggerstadter.

"To be honest, it's all about the approach and how much they want you somewhere. The approach from Augsburg was amazing," Giannoulis told their official channels in his first interview.

"I decided to come here to play in the Bundesliga, which is one of the top leagues. I've always wanted to play in it. I'm excited, and I cannot wait to start.

"Everything is nice. The lads are really friendly. Sometimes you win titles, sometimes you need to in something else. I am here to achieve our targets - win some games and get us as far as we can."

Norwich are yet to replace either Giannoulis or fellow departing left back Sam McCallum, who joined Championship rivals Sheffield United, after they both left at the end of their respective contracts.

They are hopeful of concluding a loan deal for highly-rated Manchester City youngster Callum Doyle, but want to sign two in this transfer window.

Norwich has also been linked with Portuguese duo Leonardo Lelo and Francisco Moura, with that region thought to be fertile ground in their search. At present, City's only left back option is Guilherme Montoia.
