Kellen Fisher is playing his way into Johannes Hoff Thorup’s Championship plans.

The right-back, who only turned 20 in May, has caught the eye in the early pre-season games operating in midfield and at left back against Standard Liege in the Belgian tour finale at the weekend.

Fisher made nine league appearances in his debut season after signing from Bromley, but Thorup is convinced he is ready to make the step up.

“He's a young player, but from what I see he's good enough to play," said the Dane. "So we gave him the minutes and also for us to find out where we actually think he's best. I can see him having this role where he can be a part of our build up, but also a link to accelerating the game sometimes, because he's so comfortable in these small areas.

"You just have to find the right position for him also in training and then leading into games. What we do at the moment is to find some answers with him to find out where he's most comfortable. And then to find the best possible position.

"But he's a great player, and hopefully a player that we will see a lot in the future.”

Thorup’s squad face FC Magdeburg at Carrow Road on Friday before heading out to Austria for a camp that includes a Hoffenheim friendly.

“I would say we have a good idea of where we are at the moment, where we need to be better and when we need to pay some attention in the next couple of weeks, so we can be as good as possible for the first game in the Championship,” he said. “Against two good teams from Belgium we got some answers, which is also important in training camps to have high quality matches.

“We keep developing, we can see where we need to improve. (In the Liege game) I think it was good to see the overall structure from our players that we had a good control on the ball. The moments in the game where they tried to put us under the pressure, we were not really stressed, and we kept our structure and played well.

“We should create more chances, and that is what we have to look at so we can threaten them even more in the good moments we have. Overall, okay, but we can still do better.”
