David Wagner revealed his pride after his Norwich City side confirmed their play-off spot despite a 1-0 final-day defeat to Birmingham.

The Canaries have recorded a sixth-placed finish after 46 Championship games to set up a two-legged semi-final against Daniel Farke's Leeds United. The first leg will take place at Carrow Road next Sunday.

Norwich finalised their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham, with the hosts falling out of the Championship into League One despite victory.

The confirmation of their top six spot concludes a remarkable turnaround by Wagner's men, who found themselves sitting 17th in the table but picked up 56 points from 32 matches since that 3-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers at Carrow Road on Bonfire Night in November.

After a topsy-turvy campaign, Wagner beamed with pride after confirmation of their top six places being secured and was quick to praise his group of players for how they've fought adversity.

"It is absolutely fantastic," Wagner said. "We've done a job over 46 games - something which we had as a target at the start of the season. To confirm it today is top class.

"Everyone who knows where we have come from, finishing 13th last season, a difficult autumn with a couple of months where the football club was anything but united, the players turned it. We turned it.

"It is an absolutely unbelievable achievement to be part of the post-season. This is what everyone has worked hard for in the last 10 months. To be part of the most exciting three weeks of the year is just great for Norwich City Football Club.

"We're really looking forward to the challenge. It's no problem to say we are the underdogs, and they are the favourites. I am used to this role in the play-offs.

"I know that this is now a new competition. Everyone starts with a 25pc chance of being a Premier League club in the next season, and the first step is to make it a 50pc [chance]. It will be electric.

"They worked so hard to be part of it. Now they are. But Leeds United should only be a first stop. We have a higher target, it's clear what it is and we will go for this."
