The results of the general election are in and the Labour Party has won the majority seeing Sir Keir Starmer become Prime Minister.

The results were not a surprise to many as polls from the day before the election showed that the Labour Party had a 40% chance of winning over the Conservative's 21% rating.

Altogether, the Labour Party won 392 seats, while their main opposition, the Conservatives won 99, so far.

The general election results mean that Rishi Sunak is no longer the Prime Minister of the UK and Sir Keir will take up the position.

When will Sir Keir Starmer become Prime Minister?

The winner of the general election does not become Prime Minister as soon as the results are announced, according to the Institute for Government it takes place within the first 72 hours.

On the first day, the PM-elect (Sir Keir) will be taken to Buckingham Palace for a meeting with the King.

During the private meeting, the monarch will appoint the new PM and confirm the public voting before Sir Keir makes his way to Downing Street.
