An inquest has been opened into the death of a man in his 20s whose body was found near a retail park a week earlier.

Ashley Scaife was found unresponsive in a wooded area off Longwater Lane in Costessey on Friday, July 19.

The incident saw the Longwater Lane Park in the suburban town cordoned off by police while emergency services responded.

On Friday, an inquest into Mr Scaife's death was opened at Norfolk Coroner's Court.

During a short hearing, senior coroner Jacqueline Lake confirmed that Mr Scaife was born in Norwich on March, 14, 1999, and was employed as a retail worker.

He was 25 years old and lived in a street near where he was found.

His death was the second tragedy to hit the suburb in the space of less than 24 hours.

The first saw a woman in her 40s killed after being hit by a car during the school run, in nearby Dereham Road.

While the two incidents were unconnected, the two deaths happening so close together left many in the community shaken.

Speaking following the incidents, Costessey councillor Gary Blundell said: "Two young people have lost their lives in the last day and our sympathies go out to all of those involved.

"I feel safe in saying the community is devastated.

"The town is devastated to have lost two of its members."

Just days later, another body was found in the same area, in woodland off East Hills Road, in Costessey.

Formal identification has yet to take place, but the family of missing 59-year-old Andrew Yourglivch have been informed.

Mrs Lake said that the medical cause of Mr Scaife's death had been given by a pathologist as hanging.

She adjourned the hearing for a full inquest, which is scheduled to be held on January 10, next year.
