A community leader has said a council "cannot be trusted" on a delivery date for a resurfacing programme that residents have been requesting for more than a year.

Trinity Avenue in Mildenhall, which has been dubbed 'Pothole Avenue' and the 'worst road in west Suffolk' due to its uneven surface, has been the subject of numerous calls for resurfacing from residents and councillors over the last year.

Suffolk Highways has now pledged to resurface the road on Monday and Tuesday next week.

It said temporary traffic lights will be in place at the site and work will be undertaken between 8am and 4.30pm on both days.

But Andy Neal, who represents Mildenhall Queensway on West Suffolk Council and has been vocal about the state of the road, says he remains doubtful.

"Seeing is believing is my approach to Trinity Avenue being resurfaced," he said.

"The West Suffolk district councillors, along with residents, have fought the fight for resurfacing for well over a year and seen many promises not delivered on.

"Until we see tarmac on the ground and workmen on site SCC words cannot be trusted on a delivery date."

Mr Neal said he feels Suffolk County Council has not given Mildenhall the "support and care it deserves".

He said the town has potholes throughout, with grass verges and weeds so high visibility is restricted and issues with drainage.

"Trinity Avenue obviously needs resurfacing but branching off Trinity is Scott Avenue and that’s in need of resurfacing also, but that will be another campaign and years down the road no doubt," he said.

He suggested Scott Avenue should be fixed while the teams are on site at Trinity Avenue.

A Suffolk County Council spokesperson said: "Trinity Avenue, Mildenhall will be resurfaced on 29 July and 30 July 2024 between 8am and 4.30pm both days. The work will be carried out under temporary traffic signals.

"Inspections are carried out regularly on roads in the Mildenhall area, any defects found that meet the criteria will be repaired.
