A town centre pub is to close as the current landlords are retiring after nearly five years at the helm.

Jane Howard and Steve Garner took on The Cock in Dereham in January 2020 with the aim of championing real ale.

Under their management, the pub was acclaimed by CAMRA and voted best in the district.

Now the pair have decided to retire from serving the Norwich Street pub after "many wonderful years".

On Facebook, the pair said: "This decision comes with very mixed emotions, but it’s time for us to embark on a new chapter in our lives."

To ensure the pub remains safe, the duo have started searching for the right replacement to take over.

They added: "We are committed to ensuring that your experience here continues to be just as enjoyable and welcoming as always.

"Our priority now is to find someone who shares our passion and commitment to this gem of a pub."

Ms Howard and Mr Garner will pull their last pints on Saturday (July 27) and discussions are ongoing with a potential replacement for the pub.

The couple added: "We would like to take this opportunity once again to thank our staff, customers and suppliers for their huge support during our five years here.

"Thank you for your ongoing support and loyalty."
