A woman has been taken to hospital after a driver crashed into her car while trying to evade the police.

Police received a report at 11.45pm on Monday that a man was drink driving and officers located the car and attempted to pull it over on the A47 at East Winch.

The driver failed to stop and a short pursuit followed before police stopped due to safety concerns.

The car then drove through a red light and hit another car further down the road.

The driver, a man in his 20s, tried to flee but was located shortly afterwards and arrested for failing to provide a roadside breath sample and on suspicion of dangerous driving.

He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital as a precaution and later transferred to King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

He has since been released under investigation.

The A47 was closed in both directions between the A1122 at Swaffham and the A10/A149 at King's Lynn at around 2am while a large oil spill was cleared from the road.

The driver of the other vehicle, a woman in her 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but has since been discharged.

The road reopened at 3.18am and enquiries are ongoing.

As is standard procedure, the incident will be referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
