The daughter of former England manager Terry Venables has opened a café in a north Norfolk town.

Nancy Venables, the new owner of Dixie's Kitchen, uprooted her life in Essex last year to feed the folk of Fakenham.

She opened Dixie's Kitchen just seven weeks ago, and according to reviews on the business' Facebook page the café is thriving.

She paid tribute to her father, who took England to the semi-finals of Euro 1996 and also managed Barcelona and Tottenham, as he helped inspire her to achieve her dream of opening her business.

Although her father died in November after a long illness his words of encouragement and wisdom continue to motivate her.

She said: "I remember when he got to 60, he was very into his fitness and being healthy, so I know that he would just love that I'm catering for all sorts of different people.

"There's one thing he used to say that I always think about: practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanence.

"It means if you're doing something wrong, and you keep doing it, you'll keep doing it wrong.

"So I'm always thinking about how we can be better, and that's what we practice."

Miss Venables has been in the hospitality industry before, and started her own estate agency business in Essex, before selling her shares and moving to north Norfolk.

Getting the business going was no easy feat, but Miss Venables said she has had much-needed help from close friends.

"I moved up here from Essex last year and I've been looking for something to do. Then a friend of mine said that this diner was for sale, so I bought it," Miss Venables said.

"We opened about seven weeks ago, and it was mad. We had customers coming in at once, I didn't know where anything was, and I hadn't used the gas oven before.

"But now we've settled in. I have Faith helping me and she's been great, and I finally know where everything is."

Miss Venables named the business after her granddaughter, Dixie, who recently turned four and lives in Essex.

The menu is a breakfast and lunch offering, and Miss Venables has adapted much of her menu to accommodate vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets.

She added: "I'm very happy to do off-menu requests. I always tell my customers, as long as I've got the ingredients, I'll make it."

Dixie's Kitchen can be found at 13 George Edward's Road in Fakenham, and is open from 07.30 to 14.30, Monday to Saturday.

FOOTBALL LEGEND'S CAREER

Terry Venables managed England from 1994 to 1996, most notably leading them to the semi-finals of Euro 96 on home soil.

He won La Liga and reached the European Cup final with Barcelona, and lifted the FA Cup with Tottenham.

As a midfielder Venables joined Chelsea in 1958 as a 15-year-old and made his debut against West Ham in 1960.

He went on to play 202 league games for Chelsea, including winning the League Cup, before spells at Tottenham, QPR and Crystal Palace.

Venables moved into coaching alongside Malcolm Allison at Third Division Palace after retiring as a player during the 1974-75 season.

He succeeded Allison in 1976 and, after winning promotion to the Second Division in 1977, took them into the top flight as champions in 1979.

A four-year stint with QPR - and another promotion to the First Division - followed between 1980 and 1984 before Venables was appointed Barcelona manager on the recommendation of England boss Bobby Robson, where he gained the nickname El Tel.
