Someone could die if hooligans keep launching stones at passing cars in a city suburb, a senior councillor warned.

Costessey councillor Gary Blundell warned the yobs there is a “serious concern of loss of life” for drivers travelling along a section of Dereham Road after a spate of recent attacks.

More than 10 cars have had windows smashed and bodywork dented by thrown objects, likely stones, while driving between Longwater Retail Park and Roundwell Park.

Two women feared they were being shot at after their passenger side window was "blown out" in the early hours of Saturday, leaving them shaken and afraid

"There is a serious risk that cars hit by thrown objects could swerve into oncoming traffic and collide head-on with another vehicle," Cllr Blundell said.

"Given the 40mph speed limit on Dereham Road, any sudden shock like a stone hitting a windscreen could cause a driver to veer off at high speed."

Mum-of-two Billie Rush also feared for her life after a projectile struck her windscreen on Saturday morning, saying it was "so close" to penetrating the glass.

Norfolk Police confirmed the 10 incidents, which happened across a two-week span, are linked and that "all lines of enquiry are being explored".

Police are also ramping up patrols in the area, which Cllr Blundell said would only deter offenders temporarily.

He gave an example of youths being issued antisocial behaviour orders after being caught throwing stones at cars along nearby Richmond Road, which quietened things "for a bit".

"As with anywhere, Costessey goes through quiet and busy periods of antisocial behaviour," Cllr Blundell said.

"But while throwing stones at moving vehicles is absolutely unacceptable, the area is generally very quiet.

"We can only hope that those responsible have gotten bored and moved onto something else before someone is seriously hurt."

A Norfolk Police spokeswoman said no arrests have been made or cautions issued at this time.
