Two women were left shaken after being "shot at" while driving through the city in the early hours. 

They were travelling along Dereham Road, between Longwater Retail Park and Roundwell Park in Costessey, when the passenger side window suddenly exploded. 

Mat Cooper, whose wife was driving the car, said: "My wife and mother-in-law were shot at with either an air rifle or catapult while driving back from Wimbledon at around 12:30am on Saturday.

"The window blew up just inches from my mother-in-law's head."

"It left a hole which was small to start with but got bigger as they continued along.

"Luckily nobody was hurt but you can imagine the possibilities. They were very shaken up."

Norfolk Police have since confirmed the incident is linked with 10 others that have happened between June 28 and July 13. 

They said: "The incidents generally consist of objects being thrown at passing vehicles, causing damage such as smashed windscreens, dents or scratches."

Billie Rush, a 26-year-old carer, was targeted on the same stretch of road at roughly the same time of night.

She was travelling with a friend towards the city on Saturday morning when her windscreen was struck, leaving her shaking behind the wheel.

"I was in shock, the sound when it hit was horrible," she said after the attack. 

"It was so close to coming through the windscreen, if I was going any faster it could have killed someone."

When she checked her dash cam, she struggled to spot anyone and believed someone may have been out of the picture or hiding in the bushes.

And social media sites are awash with similar reports of cars being targeted in the area in the same time frame.

A Norfolk Police spokeswoman said the incidents are under investigation and "all lines of enquiry are being explored".
