A wet spring has been blamed for the rise in overgrown grass verges and weeds sprouting from roads in a Norfolk town.

Maintenance workers with Great Yarmouth Borough Council are two weeks behind schedule due to "the unprecedented grass growth" brought about by an exceptionally wet spring.

A council spokesperson said: "The unseasonal weather has seen unprecedented grass growth and has made it difficult for us to keep up with grass cutting across the borough

"Our teams are currently two weeks behind their usual schedule and we are sorry for any inconvenience this is causing."

(Image: Denise Bradley) New measures have been put in place to help crews catch up on the long grass backlog. However, the spokesperson said: "The increased rain means the grass is longer than usual when it is cut which means it is taking longer to complete."

This comes as people across the borough complained about overgrown grass and a lack of spraying weeds to keep pesky growth at bay.

The spokesperson said the weather has led to the weeds growing faster than usual.
