People living in a Norfolk town will soon see the end of a two-year saga over plans to build a new supermarket.

The controversial proposals to demolish the former Busseys car dealership site in Yaxham Road, Dereham, and build a new Lidl branch, have hung in the balance since last July.

The plans went back to the drawing board amid concerns over "severe impacts" on road congestion with increased traffic and unsuitable access to the site.

However, with the addition of new detail to the original designs, Breckland Council's planning officers have since recommended the scheme to go ahead.

The authority had pledged to determine the future of the supermarket at a meeting in April, but the decision was pushed back once again.

The plans to replace the existing Lidl store in Kingston Road were first lodged in 2022 and drew many objections from local people who feared chaos on the surrounding roads, along with concerns from the Highways Authority.

Councillors are set to finally decide whether to approve the application at a meeting on June 4.
