A junior school has announced it has closed due to "unforeseen circumstances".

Watton Junior School closed its doors this afternoon and will remain closed tomorrow.

In a short statement to parents, a spokesman for the school wrote: "Due to unforeseen circumstances we are having to close the school with immediate effect including tomorrow.

"Please collect your children as soon as possible today.

"Do not call the school just please turn up to the office.

Parents living near the school have suggested it may be a burst water pipe which flooded part of the school.

One said she heard screaming at around 2pm.

"Hurt screaming, not playful," she added.

A spokesman from the Clarion Corvus Trust which runs the school said: "We were made aware of a minor hygiene issue at Watton Junior School on the afternoon of Thursday, May 16.

"In order to ensure the welfare of our staff and pupils, we took the decision to close the school.

"We are in the process of investigating the issue and we are confident we will be able to open the school fully as soon as possible."

They also confirmed that nobody was in any danger or came to any harm and said sightings of an air ambulance in the area were unrelated but refused to give any further comment.
