A man who was arrested during the throes of a mental health crisis died while being held in police custody, a court has heard.

Andrew Davis suffered a cardiac failure while at a police station in Wymondham related to a medication overdose he had taken a day before. He was 54.

A jury inquest into his death resumed at Norfolk Coroner's Court on Monday, which is scheduled to last for several days.

It heard that Mr Davis had been arrested on suspicion of affray after threatening to hurt himself and his wife with two kitchen knives in his Norwich home, while in the midst of a psychotic episode.

Earlier that day - June 26, 2022 - he had attended the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital having taken an overdose of prescribed medication, but was discharged after six hours without ill effects.

But police were then called to his home in Earlham Grove where they found Mr Davis with a knife in each hand.

However, due to the incident occurring in Mr Davis' home, police were unable to detain him under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act so he was instead arrested and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre (PIC).

Arriving shortly after midnight the following morning, Mr Davis was kept in custody to await an assessment of his mental health.

Police decided that day to take no further action against him, but the court heard no mental health beds were available and he was instead due to return home where he was to be visited by crisis workers from the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

But while arrangements were being made for his release he went into cardiac arrest, collapsed and died at the station - despite efforts to resuscitate him using a defibrillator.

The inquest continues.
