A family business based in Norwich is helping to protect thousands of UK homes from flash flooding, with a product that can drain away near unlimited levels of surface water.

Resins R Us, which was founded by the Lake family in 2019, has seen demand for its resin and stone driveway toppers skyrocket, with more than 80,000 projects using the product in the past 18 months.

It works by creating a “honey-comb” like layer, made from resin bound material, which allows rainwater to soak into the ground beneath.

The material is then laid on top of layers of hard core, tarmac, and finally an open grade base, allowing 850 litres of water per square metre to drain away every minute.

Company director, Daniel Lake, said: “Most concrete driveways have just one or two drains on them so can only handle a certain amount of surface water before it starts getting waterlogged.

“This stuff means the whole driveway surface acts as a drainage system, so it’s highly effective during sudden heavy rain.”

Since launching five years ago the firm has supplied enough product to drain away the equivalent of 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools - that's 25 million litres of rainwater.

The high demand for the material has allowed the family business to grow quickly.

From two members of staff in 2019 to 14 this year, Mr Lake said the operation was expanding year on year.

He said: “With demand the way it is for flooding solutions I predict we’ll have doubled in size over the next five years.

“Local authorities are starting to crack down on people wanting to build driveways and outdoor areas that aren’t flood resistant or make the situation worse, so we’re likely to see more and more people turning to our product as we go forward.”
