A town in Norfolk hopes to make it into the record books by hosting the world's biggest-ever cream tea party.

Swaffham Cultural Consortium hopes to smash the previous record of 1,088 people at its free community event held on bank holiday Monday.

To help with its dream, the group is asking the local community to chip in by baking scones and setting up tables in order to be a part of history.

Sue Gattuso, chair of Swaffham Cultural Consortium, said: “We want as many people across Norfolk to visit Swaffham and take part in our record-breaking cream tea party.

"This free event will be a truly amazing, communal experience packed with fun, laughter and wonderful Swaffham scones.”

The tea party will take place at the Buttercross in Swaffham's Market Place between 1pm and 3pm.

The town has a long history of people coming together to celebrate historic events such as royal coronations.

At Queen Victoria’s coronation in 1838 more 2,000 people, almost the entire population of the town at the time, came together for a communal meal.
